Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that India will be opening two new consulates in the US, one in Boston and another in Los Angeles, to keep up with the population growth of the Indian-American community in those cities.
Both the cities have seen the Indian-American population growing in recent years, and with it the demands for facilities. Boston is considered the US education capital, while Los Angeles is the country’s entertainment capital.
“Friends last year, I announced that our government had plans to open a new consulate in Seattle. It is now operational. I had asked for suggestions from you for two more consulates. I am happy to announce that after reviewing your suggestions, India has decided to open two new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles,” the PM announced at the Modi and US event in New York on Sunday.
PM Modi made the announcement while addressing a zealous crowd of around 13,000 Indian-Americans at Long Island’s Nassau Veterans Coliseum. The event was part of the prime minister’s packed itinerary for his three-day visit to the US.
Prime Minster Modi held bilateral talks with the leaders of US, Japan and Australia, at the Quad Summit held in Wilmington, Delaware on Saturday, September 21.
He is scheduled to deliver an address on Monday at the United Nations General Assembly summit in New York.
